How to reduce your council tax bill in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole and what you could be missing
Council tax in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole rose by 6.74% in 2026/27. For a Band D property that works out at around £10.42 more per month. If you are already stretched, that is a significant hit. The good news is that multiple schemes exist to reduce your bill, and far fewer people claim them than actually qualify.
This is everything you need to know in plain terms, including links to check and act without having to phone anyone.
What Is Council Tax Support?
Council Tax Support (CTS) is a reduction applied directly to your council tax bill. It is not a loan. You do not pay it back. It can cut your bill by a significant amount, and in some cases wipe it out entirely. It does not get paid to you automatically. You have to apply for it separately, even if you are already on Universal Credit.
Who Can Claim Council Tax Support? Eligibility at a Glance
You may be eligible if one or more of the following apply to you:
You pay council tax and are named on the bill
You are on a low income, whether working or not
You claim benefits, including Universal Credit, ESA, JSA or Income Support
You have dependent children living with you
You are ill or have a disability
You care for someone
You are State Pension age or over
You have been recently bereaved
You are pregnant or have recently had a baby
You have less than £16,000 in savings
You can apply whether you are employed or unemployed. If you live with a partner, you will need to make a joint claim.
Who Cannot Claim?
Your savings are over £16,000, unless you receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit
You are not liable to pay council tax or are exempt from it
You are in the UK as a European Economic Area jobseeker
You are subject to immigration control and your leave states you cannot claim public funds
"But I Work Full Time, Surely I Don't Qualify?"
This is the most common reason people do not apply, and it costs them money. BCP's scheme is means-tested, meaning it compares your actual household income against a standard set of living costs. If your income is low enough relative to your household size and circumstances, you can qualify even if you work full time. Do not assume. Check first using one of the free tools listed below.
Discounts and Exemptions You Might Also Be Missing
Council Tax Support is just one way to reduce your bill. BCP offers a wide range of discounts and exemptions that can be stacked on top of, or instead of, CTS depending on your situation.
Single Person Discount (25% off)
If you live alone you are almost certainly entitled to a 25% single person discount. On a Band D property this saves approximately £543 per year. Apply at: bcpcouncil.gov.uk/council-tax/council-tax-discounts-and-exemptions
"Disregarded" Adults - Who Does Not Count?
This is one of the least-known rules. The following people are not counted when calculating the number of adult residents in a property:
Full-time students or student nurses
Care workers or carers
Apprentices
People in detention
Permanent residents in a hospital, nursing home or care home
Youth training trainees
Members of religious communities
Residents of hostels
School leavers aged 18 or 19 until the following November
People who are severely mentally impaired
If any adult in your household falls into one of these categories, your household count drops, which could qualify you for the single person discount even if you do not technically live alone. Full list: bcpcouncil.gov.uk/council-tax/council-tax-discounts-and-exemptions/disregarded-persons
Disabled Person Discount
If you live in a property where changes have been made to help a disabled child or adult, you may be eligible for a discount that effectively moves your property down one band, so a Band D property would pay at the Band C rate. Apply at: bcpcouncil.gov.uk/council-tax/council-tax-discounts-and-exemptions/council-tax-discounts-for-disabled-people
Severe Mental Impairment (SMI) Discount or Exemption
If you or a member of your household has a severe mental impairment, you may be eligible for a discount or exemption. You can get a 100% discount if all adults qualify as severely mentally impaired or are full-time students, 50% if everyone else is disregarded, and 25% if one person qualifies as severely mentally impaired. Apply at: bcpcouncil.gov.uk/council-tax/council-tax-discounts-and-exemptions/severe-mental-impairment
Carer and Care Worker Exemptions
If you provide at least 35 hours of care per week for someone who is not your spouse, partner or child under 18, you may be disregarded for council tax purposes. This can trigger a single person discount or affect the CTS calculation in your favour. Apply at: bcpcouncil.gov.uk/council-tax/council-tax-discounts-and-exemptions
Student Exemption
Full-time students are disregarded for council tax purposes. If everyone in your household is a full-time student, the property is exempt and you pay nothing. If you live with one non-student, the household gets a 25% discount. Apply at: bcpcouncil.gov.uk/council-tax/council-tax-discounts-and-exemptions
Second Adult Rebate
If you qualify for both Council Tax Support and Second Adult Rebate, BCP will award whichever pays the most. This is worth knowing if another adult lives in your property on a very low income but is not your partner.
Is Your Home in the Right Council Tax Band?
This is one of the most overlooked money-saving checks in the country. The original banding exercise in 1991 was notoriously rushed, with valuers assessing around 21 million properties in just a few months, often using drive-by estimates. Errors have persisted for over 30 years.
The Valuation Office Agency (VOA) bands every home in England and Wales for council tax. If you think your band is wrong, you may be able to challenge it.
Step 1: Check your band and compare it with your neighbours
Official GOV.UK band checker: gov.uk/council-tax-bands - look up your band and see what similar properties on your street are paying
counciltaxchecker.co.uk: counciltaxchecker.co.uk - pulls data directly from the VOA and shows your band alongside every other property on your street in under 60 seconds. No sign-up, no email, no cost.
MoneySavingExpert full guide: moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/council-tax-bands-change - Martin Lewis's step-by-step guide on how to challenge your band, including template wording.
Step 2: Challenge your band if you have grounds
There are two types of band challenge. You can make a formal proposal if you have been paying council tax on your property for less than 6 months, or if the VOA has changed your band in the last 6 months. If you have been in your property for more than 6 months, you can request an informal band review, though you will need to provide strong evidence.
Contact the VOA directly online at gov.uk/contact-voa, by phone on 03000 501 501, or by email at ctinbox@voa.gov.uk.
Important: If you challenge your band, you must continue to pay council tax at your current band until your appeal is decided.
