Putting your health into writing can feel exposing.
Whether you are contacting an employer, a university, a housing department, or a benefits office, there is often a quiet fear beneath it. You may worry about sounding dramatic. You may worry about not sounding serious enough. You may worry about being judged.
Many people reach this point already exhausted by appointments, assessments, or long waiting lists. The letter becomes one more thing to carry.
Why this situation happens so often
Medical and mental health communication sits at the intersection of evidence and perception.
NHS data shows that one in four adults in England experience a mental health problem each year. Yet many still report feeling hesitant to disclose this formally, especially in employment or education settings.

The difficulty is that decision makers are usually looking for three things:
What the condition is
How it affects you functionally
What specific adjustment or outcome you are requesting
If these points are unclear in the opening, the message can feel unfocused, even when it is valid.
What usually helps at this stage
What often makes the difference is not stronger language, but clearer framing.
A calm, structured opening that briefly states:
The condition or diagnosis where relevant
The practical impact
The purpose of the letter
This approach keeps dignity intact while making the request easier to understand.
For example, compare:
A long explanation that begins with years of history before stating the issue,
with
An opening that calmly states the condition, the functional impact, and the specific reason for writing.
The second tends to receive clearer responses because the purpose is visible immediately.
A small task to try
Look at the first four lines of your draft.
If someone who does not know you read only that section, would they clearly understand:
What health issue is relevant
How it affects your daily functioning
What you are asking them to consider or do
If any of those points are missing, the issue may not be credibility. It may be clarity.
A simple place to start
